Israel has escalated tensions with the Netherlands by revoking the diplomatic credentials of Dutch officials operating in the occupied West Bank. This action comes in response to the Netherlands’ recent decision to implement restrictions on goods originating from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which took effect on September 22.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced that the Dutch Embassy was informed about the requirement for its diplomats in Ramallah to return their Israeli-issued diplomatic documents within seven days. Sa’ar noted that Dutch officials could still continue their operations in the West Bank, but only with authorization from the Palestinian Authority.
The decision marks a significant point of contention in the ongoing diplomatic friction between Israel and several European nations over settlement policies and the circumstances in the Palestinian territories. Israel has consistently opposed actions that target its settlements, criticizing countries that impose restrictions or engage in actions related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
This development adds to the growing list of diplomatic challenges Israel faces with European countries regarding its settlement policies. The situation remains tense as Israel and the Netherlands navigate this diplomatic rift, highlighting the broader complexities of international relations concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
