A new direct gas pipeline that will connect Norway and the Netherlands is advancing as planned, following the completion of a successful feasibility study. This development marks a significant step forward for North Sea pipeline operator Nogat, which is now focusing on refining critical aspects of the project, such as its transport capacity. The planned infrastructure aims to strengthen the security of gas supply by providing an additional route for Norwegian gas, especially in scenarios where existing pipeline connections encounter disruptions.
The pipeline is projected to commence operations in 2029, boasting a capacity of over 4 billion cubic metres of gas annually. This volume represents approximately 15% of the Netherlands’ entire gas demand. As domestic energy production declines, the new pipeline is considered crucial for maintaining energy security, and it aligns with Europe’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on suppliers from geopolitically unstable regions.
Nogat has highlighted the ease with which the new pipeline can integrate with existing gas systems, leveraging the Norwegian offshore pipeline. According to Nogat Director Falco van Wissen, Norwegian gas currently constitutes about one-third of Europe’s gas imports. He also pointed out that Norwegian gas is a less polluting option compared to LNG imports, underscoring the environmental benefits of this project.
As the project moves forward, involved parties are expected to finalize decisions regarding the investments necessary for its completion by the middle of next year. This timeline will be crucial for maintaining the schedule and ensuring that the pipeline becomes operational on time, providing a reliable energy supply to the Netherlands and enhancing regional energy security.
