As Ukraine embarks on crucial peace talks to bring an end to Russia’s ongoing aggression, Norway has partially restricted airspace over Oslo and the adjacent Romerike region. This move coincides with the arrival of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for high-level discussions aimed at advancing diplomatic solutions to the conflict.
President Zelensky is engaging in talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff expected to join the dialogue. Additionally, Jared Kushner will participate remotely. The discussions are scheduled to extend through Wednesday, underscoring the urgency and seriousness of the diplomatic efforts.
Norwegian Prime Minister Støre emphasized the importance of these meetings in steering diplomatic efforts towards a more productive direction. Both Norway and Finland have lent their support to Ukraine through financial aid, military cooperation, and comprehensive European security initiatives since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The peace talks take place amidst ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. In response, Ukraine has been vocal about the need for stronger Western air defense support and sustained international pressure on Moscow to curb the violence.
On the sidelines of the talks, President Zelensky also engaged with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This interaction has buoyed hopes within Kyiv that Washington will continue its support for Ukraine, including issuing warnings about potential Russian military actions.
Norway’s political leadership has highlighted the significance of using these discussions to influence diplomatic efforts, ensuring that Ukraine’s interests remain at the forefront of any negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict.
