Germany, France, and Spain have borne the brunt, collectively accounting for over 25,000 of these deaths. Germany alone has reported approximately 14,000 fatalities related to heat from April to early August, marking its deadliest summer in terms of heat-related deaths since records began. Meanwhile, Spain has faced nearly 5,000 heat-attributed fatalities since May, setting a new record for the country as well.
France, between late May and July, has documented around 7,300 excess deaths, though this preliminary figure excludes data from August. Other nations such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have also seen notable increases in mortality rates during the extreme heat episodes. These heatwaves pushed temperatures beyond 40°C in vast areas of western and central Europe, resulting in numerous national and local temperature records being shattered. Scientists attribute the rising frequency and severity of these extreme heat events to climate change.
Identifying deaths directly caused by heat can be challenging, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing health issues like cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, rather than being the immediate cause of death. As countries continue to compile delayed mortality data, experts predict the overall death toll across Europe will climb, particularly once the figures for August are incorporated.
