Meta has introduced a new AI-driven feature called Muse Image on Instagram, which has stirred privacy debates. This tool allows users to create AI-generated images by using photos from public Instagram accounts by default. As a result, some privacy advocates have expressed concern that users might not realize their publicly shared images are being employed in this manner.
According to Meta, the feature incorporates safety protocols, ensuring that private accounts and users under 18 are automatically excluded from this image generation process. Additionally, adults with public profiles have the option to opt out by adjusting their privacy settings in the “Sharing and Reuse” section. However, critics argue that the opt-out option is not easily accessible, and they contend that users should have been given the choice to opt in before their images were utilized for AI creation.
Further concerns have been raised by advocates over the potential inclusion of children in photos posted by adults. Even though there are protective measures for underage accounts, this loophole might still allow children’s images to be referenced in AI-generated content. Meta has responded by assuring that Muse Image incorporates safeguards to prevent misuse and allows users to report any inappropriate AI-generated images.
The Muse Image feature is currently accessible via the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories in the United States, and WhatsApp in select countries. Meta has announced plans for broader availability in the future as part of its ongoing expansion strategy.
