The event is being held in Gdańsk, Poland.
The current discord between Kyiv and Warsaw arose after President Zelenskyy sanctioned the naming of a Ukrainian military unit in honor of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). While many Ukrainians regard the UPA as a symbol of their struggle for independence, in Poland, the group is associated with the deaths of numerous Poles during the Second World War. This decision has attracted criticism from Polish leaders, including President Karol Nawrocki, who accused Ukraine of disregarding the historical suffering experienced by Poles.
Zelenskyy has defended the move, asserting that military units should have the autonomy to choose names that reflect Ukrainian history. He also cautioned that such political disagreements could potentially undermine the cooperative relationship between Ukraine and Poland, particularly in the face of ongoing security threats.
In response to the situation, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for both countries to de-escalate the tension, emphasizing that these disagreements should not harm the strategic partnership that has been fostered between them. He highlighted the importance of maintaining unity, especially given their close collaboration since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, European officials have expressed concern that the deteriorating relations between Ukraine and Poland could inadvertently serve Russia’s interests. They are advocating for sustained cooperation between the neighboring countries, underscoring the necessity of a united front in addressing shared security challenges.
